Meet The Team: Michael Whelan

In order to make the best possible Virtual Reality experience, you need a team full of experts. From artists, to game designers, to system developers – everyone comes together to create something truly unique and inspiring.

In this series we’re going to open the doors to Midow Studios and invite you to get to know some of the amazing creatives that are working on our currently unannounced VR project. Today I have the strange pleasure of interviewing myself! I’m Michael Whelan, although most people call me Wheels, and I’m the Community & Content Manager at Midow Studios:

Hi, Wheels! Tell us what you do here at Midow Studios.

Wow this weird, but hey! I’m Wheels, and I manage all the forward facing aspects of our studio.

That includes things like managing social media pages, creating and editing video posts for our games, as well as looking after and talking to our community on platforms like Discord.

How long have you worked at Midow Studios, and what did you do before this?

I started at Midow Studios just this year and I’m currently the newest member on the team, but before working here I’ve had a pretty long career in the games industry. I’ve worked for indie companies like inkle Studios and for big studios like Creative Assembly, working on the Total War franchise.

Most recently I was one of the founding members and the Head of Video for the sadly now shutdown website Dicebreaker.com. There we covered all things tabletop and it’s where I truly learned to love card games of all kinds!

What most excites you about the game we’re working on?

As I’ve alluded to above, working on a game with similar mechanics to a card game is a big deal for me. Being able to part of the original discussions of what makes our game work on a mechanical level and helping to bring all my tabletop experience both as a player and a critic is really fulfilling!

I already get really excited about showing off cool card games on the internet as it is, being able to both do it professionally and also talk about a game I’ve helped create is a dream come true.

What are some of your favourite video games?

I have a pretty eclectic taste but one of the things I love the most in gaming is a well written RPG. Disco Elysium is truly an all timer for me but it’s also been great seeing everyone enjoy Oblivion for the first time, I still think it’s the best game Bethesda have ever made.

As you can probably guess I also play a hell of a lot of tabletop games, especially TCGs like Magic: the Gathering and Altered. I’ve usually got friends over most weeks to crack open a new board game or draft some MTG.

If you could cast a magical spell right now, what would it do?

I’m an hour behind the rest of the team and there’s some real early risers among them so maybe I need a spell that gives me a few extra hours in bed each day?

Thanks so much for answering our questions… me, and I can’t wait to see all the cool content you make about our game. In fact, I’ll have a front row seat!

If you want to learn more about our upcoming VR game be sure to head over to the Discovery of Magic page. There you can see what we’re up to and sign up for email updates and our Discord Server!

For now, that concludes our Meet the Team series! But watch the blog for exciting new things coming your way soon. Happy casting!
