Meet The Team: Aaron Zarb

In order to make the best possible Virtual Reality experience, you need a team full of experts. From artists, to game designers, to system developers – everyone comes together to create something truly unique and inspiring.

In this series we’re going to open the doors to Midow Studios and invite you to get to know some of the amazing creatives that are working on our currently unannounced VR project. For this week’s article we’re delving into the nuts and bolts of our game’s mechanics with the Lead Game Designer, Aaron Zarb:

Hi, Aaron! Tell us what you do here at Midow Studios.

Hi! I’m Aaron Zarb, the Lead Game Designer. That means I conceptualise and brainstorm new features and in-game mechanics. I mainly do my work using Notion and Microsoft Word. However, I also use Blender and Clip Studio Paint to create concept art pieces to complement my Notion Documentation.

How long have you worked at Midow Studios, and what did you do before this?

I’ve worked here at Midow for a year and a half, starting at the beginning of 2024. Before I worked here, I worked as the lead 3D artist and later Artistic Director at Metaverse Architects. This startup worked on building diverse Metaverse Experiences with clients worldwide. One of the highlights was working with Snoop Dogg himself!

What most excites you about the game we’re working on?

As a game designer, I get involved in all of the different aspects of our game, but what excites me the most is the mechanics. I’m excited to share our unique twist on traditional card-like mechanics and see the audience’s reaction to it! One of my favourite features has to be the language aspects of our threads and spell weaving. Without giving away too much, watching players learn about our constructed language will be so cool!

What are some of your favourite video games?

*I’m a huuuge fan of RPGs with my favourites being God of War Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima. Kratos has to be one of the best-written characters in all of gaming, and I will never forget the goosebumps of finishing Ghost of Tsushima for the first time. And of course it wouldn’t be a conversation with me if I didn’t mention Magic: the Gathering (even though it isn’t a video game).*

If you could cast a magical spell right now, what would it do?

I would cast a spell that would allow me to teleport wherever I want. That way, I can grab coffee worldwide while writing out design documents!

Thanks so much for answering our questions, Aaron! We’re so excited to see the designs you’ve made come to life in our game. And let’s play some Magic some time.

If you want to learn more about our upcoming VR game then stay tuned for more updates here on the Midow Studios blog. We’ve got huge news coming very soon!
